The techie bit

At York Data Services we use Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networking which integrates Layer 2 information about our network links (such as bandwidth and utilisation) into Layer 3 (IP) in order to simplify and improve IP-packet exchange (which is the method by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet).

MPLS provides a robust high speed networking solution that gives network operators a great deal of flexibility to divert and route traffic around link failures, congestion and bottlenecks. You remain connected with a higher Quality of Service (QoS) and all together better user experience.

How does it work?

Across the UK there is a fibre based core network with 96 access points that connect each point to the rest of the Internet. To connect to the core network, York Data Services connects additional fibre circuits to these Points of Presence (POPs) to provide a connection for data services such as web browsing, email and Voice over IP telephone calls.

Just how fast can it be?

As we only use fibre optic networking, our connections run at the speed of light. Each wave length is capable of operating at 2.5Gbps (around 300 times faster than a copper cable 8Mbps broadband connection) and doesn't suffer from speed degradation the further from the exchange you are located. Even greater connectivity speeds can be achieved by combining multiple wave lengths. Whatever your demand for connectivity, we can exceed it.
