York Data Services was co-founded by Mark Fordyce in 2003. With a background in the music industry combined with rolling out network technology in the London banking and stock-broking sector, Mark was at the forefront of the digital and internet revolution. A pioneer in bringing gigabit connectivity to York and helping the city achieve its aspirations of becoming the UK’s first gigabit city, York Data Services moved to York Science Park in 2003 and its headquarters are still based at the Science Park today.
A prominent figure in York, Mark continues to work alongside the City of York Council and other public and private sector partners to help the city build on its foundations as the first UK Gigabit city. Mark has also been instrumental in co-founding and developing IX Leeds, the Leeds based Northern Internet Exchange. The only independent internet hub outside London, it connects the North directly to the rest of the world.
York Data Services has grown from its first multi-occupancy building on York Science Park to bringing its expertise to business centres and parks and multi-occupancy buildings across Yorkshire and the UK. Connecting directly into our core national network, these clients attract high quality businesses who need the resilience, security, and ultra-fast speeds our network provides.
York Data Services has invested over £1 million in developing its own private, full fibre and fully resilient network. Connecting businesses in York, Leeds and beyond to the UK’s national internet exchanges in London and Leeds (IX Leeds), the network delivers multi-gigabit capability for businesses in the region to compete on a global scale. The network is continually being upgraded and futureproofed including developing the capability recently between York and Leeds to 100GB.
